Thanks, Tina. The more I read about this topic, and the more examples I see of new types of releases and forms of media communications, the more my opinion evolves.

Over time messaging and message mediums (including press releases) has become more segmented to different targets. I think that process is just speeding up. For the press release, this means a smaller portion of journalists want the traditional release (though some still do), more will want a release like Foremski suggested, while others will just want access to information through a blog and so on.

Emphraim, you hit the nail on the head! I don't know whether you've been following the "social media release" discussion in the blogoshphere first brought on by Tom Foremski of Silicon Valley Watcher. Just last week Stuart Bruce of A PR Guy's Musing and I have been quarreling over its use and benefits. You bring up another big plus of the social media press release: It will eliminate the "Company XYZ, leading provider of..." header. What a relief that would be for all journalists and PR people!
