Normally I would completely agree. Despite what people say, they let the fears generated by negative campaigns override their promise to be against politicians that do so.

The difference with McCain is that his appeal is based on a profile that is known for staying positive and not stooping to typical political games. While these commercials can hurt Obama, they can hurt McCain more by making it easier to throw a negative charge right back at him - that he's simply a continuation of Bush (which team Obama has done).

So, like so many other races, it may come down to the politics of fear and which fear is greater - the fear of four more years of Bush or the fear of an unknown quantity in Obama.

I would not underestimate the power of negative ads...Swift boat ads have been credited with beating Kerry.

In Obama's case, he seems free to make absurd claims w/out critical questions from the media...

As a lifelong democrat, I'm not in favor of negative ads, but I am more opposed to the incredible pro-Obama media bias.
