Thank you, Michele. I think too many senior executives forget how just their tone sends a message that impacts how other people think. I wonder how much easier it was for the staff on the airplane and in tower control to think and act clearly because their captain had set the right tone.

The flip side is too many business situations where bad decisions were made not because of the words or actions of a CEO, but because of the tone the executive set.

Absolutely, Ephraim. Captain Sullenberger demonstrates a leader’s ability to make clear decisions in a crisis. He was declarative in the way he conveyed decisions and his status to air traffic control. Confident, calm and sharp to speed communication. Leadership is conveyed in many ways – but, as this video demonstrates, it’s true that how one communicates is just as important as one what says. The captain’s declaration that he was going to land in the Hudson, the calm, deliberate way in which his voice conveyed that extraordinary message, seemed to transfer to the controller -- helping to keep him calm as he set emergency response protocols in motion far sooner than otherwise might have occurred. It’s a chilling, amazing video, with a wonderful outcome and a great demonstration of crisis communication at its best. Thanks for the post.
